Child development for community workers

In a community-based rehabilitation (CBR) programme, rehabilitation activities with children are often seen as a priority because effective, early intervention at a young age can prevent an impairment becoming more disabling to a child. CBR workers need a high level of knowledge and skills in child development theory and related interventions to help the child to develop.

Resources in this Key list cover health and hygiene, nutrition, physical and mental stimulation (e.g. through play), education and social and emotional security. The resources mainly relate to normal child development, although some include information about developmental delay. The list also includes some materials on Child-to-Child, an approach to help children learn about health and hygiene from one another. This conference report addresses the benefits and challenges of investing in early childhood development. Programmes that invest in children's basic needs: health, nutrition, emotional and intellectual development help ensure children's progress in primary school, through secondary school and then into the workforce. This in turn can help break the cycle of poverty. It concludes that the effectiveness of ECD programmes should be continually evaluated, and a deliberately planned global coalition to fund ECD initiatives should be pursued. The publication includes essential resource information that includes descriptions and case studies of successful early childhood development programmes throughout the world.
