To help with the vast range of information on distance learning, here are some recommendations about helpful resources that are simple to use to complement learning, do not require subscriptions, include resources in a range of languages (used in the context of HI programs), and are free to the user.

Priority assistive products list

The Priority Assistive Products List (APL) aspires to follow in the footsteps of the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, which creates awareness among the public, mobilises resources and stimulates competition. The Priority Assistive Products List is similarly intended to be a catalyst in promoting access to assistive technology. It is not a restrictive list but aims to provide each Member State with a model from which to develop a National priority assistive products list. 

The List includes hearing aids, wheelchairs, communication aids, spectacles, artificial limbs, pill organizers, memory aids and other essential items for many older people and people with disabilities to be able to live a healthy, productive and dignified life.

The APL is part of the Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE)

The Blue Trunk Library is a 'ready-to-use' mini-library designed for district health centres in Africa as a means of compensating for the lack of up-to-date medical and health information. The mini-libraries which consist of more than one hundred books and three journal subscriptions, are contained in blue metal trunks to ensure easy transportation and protection. Priority is given to practical manuals (especially those published by WHO) offering accessible solutions to the medical, public health and management problems medical and health staff may have to face

African Index Medicus (AIM)

African Index Medicus is a project based in the World Health Organisation's African Regional Office, and supported by "national focal points" -- libraries in different countries which collect, index and send data to the project coordinator in Congo. The project is designed to provide access to health information published in or related to Africa and to encourage local publishing. It aims to collect references of published and unpublished health information which is not indexed elsewhere. Materials indexed include conference proceedings, journal articles and reports covering subjects such as rehabilitation, leprosy and epilepsy from a medical and practical perspective.
