The Evidence Digest aims to capture knowledge emerging from Helpdesk activities in a systematic manner and disseminate findings. This short summary will:

Share information on and learnings from the Disability Inclusion Helpdesk over the last quarter, highlighting headline messages and implications for programmers and policymakers;
Share relevant information and learning from other DID outputs;
Provide relevant information on recent evidence, policy changes and events in the field of disability inclusion, and;
Raise awareness on how to access the Helpdesk and demonstrate its offer.

Online collective identities for autism: The perspective of Brazilian parents

Across the Inclusion International network, many individuals and organisations took part in workshops, surveys and interviews to report:

  • what self-advocacy means to them
  • what good support is 
  • how organisations can be more inclusive
  • the vital role that families play in empowering self-advocacy.

This report provides a snapshot of work, and has some useful information for self-advocates, supporters, organisations and families. As well as containing the results from the global survey, interviews and workshops, this report also provides some useful guidance for anyone who wants to make the world more inclusive for people with intellectual disabilities.

Undergraduate medical and pharmacy education : the need for change and the way forward

This is a report of the Second International Consultation on Undergraduate Medical and Pharmacy Education, convened by Health Action International Asia Pacific (HAIAP) in collaboration with the South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the World Health Organization (WHO). It attempts to identify the shortfalls of medical and pharmacy education in the context of developing countries, indigenous cultures and changing expectations and demands on the profession. The consultation produced a series of recommendations, including introducing social, economic and ethical concepts in medical education and making access to information resources more available to pharmacy students and pharmacists

The CABA (Children Affected by AIDS) online discussion forum was established by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to facilitate vital discussion and information exchange on efforts to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on children, families and communities. USAID and the Synergy Project, which hosts the forum on behalf of USAID, encourages all to participate.

This book looks at the way communities and groups in developing countries are appropriating information and communication technologies (ICTs) to address their needs. It finds that ICTs are being integrated into wider community-based activities and adapted to fit different contexts. It follows on from the paper "Discovering the Magic Box". It finds that there are still few examples of community-driven and locally appropriated ICT initiatives and an absence of standards or guidelines to evaluate ICT-based projects. The book includes some analytical frameworks and indicators to identify good practice and evidence of impact A significant development has been in the growth of telecommunications, in particular mobile phones, that are relatively cheap and powerful tools for poor communities, even in remote areas. The book concludes that the power of oral communication through telephones and radio cannot be underestimated. The book proposes that the main challenge is to adapt the new, usually computer-based ICTs to the needs of poor, predominantly oral-based communities so that they can be appropriated effectively and quickly
