A world that counts : mobilising the data revolution for sustainable development

UNITED NATIONS (UN) INDEPENDENT EXPERT ADVISORY GROUP ON A DATA REVOLUTION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (IEAG)
November 2014

Expand view

This report highlights two big global challenges for the current state of data: whole groups of people are not being counted and important aspects of people’s lives and environmental conditions are still not measured; and there are huge and growing inequalities in access to data and information, and in the ability to use it. The report makes specific recommendations on how to address these challenges, calling for a UN-led effort to mobilise the data revolution for sustainable development: fostering and promoting innovation to fill data gaps; mobilising resources to overcome inequalities between developed and developing countries and between data-poor and data-rich people; leadership and coordination to enable the data revolution to play its full role in the realisation of sustainable development

Protect for the future : placing children's protection and care at the heart of the MDGs

DELAP, Emily
et al
July 2010

Expand view

This paper argues that, in relation to children, this vital change in approach must go beyond a consideration of survival, health and education rights already specifically referred to in the millennium development goals (MDGs), to encompass rights relating to children’s protection and care. These include recognition of the central importance of family-based care for child wellbeing, and children’s rights to be free from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. It is argued that only through a consideration of such rights will it be possible to make wide-reaching and sustainable progress in efforts to alleviate child poverty, increase access to education, improve maternal and child health, and reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS

Expand view

‘Progress for Children’ is a series that monitors progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. This edition focuses on maternal health and, in particular, maternal mortality. It considers general progress and then examines particular regions. The report card acknowledges progress in improving maternal health, but argues that it is not sufficient to meet the MDG target of reducing maternal mortality by three quarters between 1990 and 2015

Maternal mortality in 2005 : estimates developed by WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the World Bank

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO)
et al
2007

Expand view

This report attempts to develop an estimate of international maternal mortality. A lack of reliable maternal mortality data has made it difficult to assess the extent of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5. The report concludes that maternal mortality has decreased at an average of less than 1per cent annually between 1990 and 2005, far below the 5.5 per cent annual decline necessary to achieve the fifth Millennium Development Goal of reducing the maternal mortality ratio by three quarters between 1990 and 2015. Three previous attempts to estimate maternal mortality were made in 1990, 1995 and 2000

Health aid and infant mortality

MISHRA, Prachi
NEWHOUSE, David
2007

Expand view

This paper examines the relationship between health aid and infant mortality, using data from 118 countries between 1973 and 2004. Health aid has a statistically significant effect on infant mortality: doubling per capita health aid is associated with a two percent reduction in the infant mortality rate. For the average country, this implies that increasing per capita health aid by US$1.60 per year is associated with 1.5 fewer infant deaths per thousand births. The estimated effect is small, relative to the targets envisioned by the Millennium Development Goals
