Epilepsy is an important health problem in developing countries where the prevalence can be up to 57 per 1000 population. The prevalence is particularly high in Latin America and in several African countries notability Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania. Parasitic infections particuarly neurocysticercosis, schistosomiasis, taxoplasmosis, malaria, meningitis and enciphalitis are important etiological factors. Other reasons for the high incidence include intracranial infections, perinatal brain damage, head injuries, toxic agents and hereditary factors. Many of these factors are preventable or modifiable and the introduction of appropriate measures to this could lead to a substantial decrease in the incidence of eplilepsy in those countries.

Disabled teachers and other human rights activists discussed in a workshop setting and observed in the field to answer the questions of how are PWDs interacting with their communities, how are the communities interacting with PWDs and what are the challenges (and possible solutions) of their activist work...This research wanted to get a comprehensive picture of the current situation of PWDs in Tanzania. It concludes that mutual distrust is the main attitude that characterizes the relationship between disabled and non-disabled Tanzanians and that only intensive and targeted confrontations and exchanges between the two parties can achieve a signifi cant attitude change"

CBM Australia self-help group enquiry

CBM AUSTRALIA

Expand view

This guidance considers how self help groups are supported and the factors that are needed to ensure that they are functional, inclusive and sustainable.

This was a small-scale enquiry that involved looking at case studies from six partners that employ self-help group development for a range of purposes and in a range of geographical locations. A questionnaire was used by project officers with each of the six selected projects, and the resulting information was analysed by a group from CBMA’s International Programs department, with key areas of learning identified from this discussion. Findings are not comprehensive or conclusive and there is not one model for success. Instead the aim is to draw some useful tips from partners’ experiences.
