The Task Force for Child Survival and Development was commissioned by the Early Child Development Team of the World Bank to develop an assessment tool to help programmes address issues and needs of young families and their children. The tool kit was designed to access the needs of young children (under 8 years old) in communities heavily affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The assessment provides information about the household, family, the main caregiver of young children, each child under 8 years of age, their basic needs (housing, food, clothing, bedding, daily activities, health, education and childcare), and unmet needs. The information from the assessment is intended to be used to design service programmes targeted to the needs of young children and their families
The needs assessment is carried out through the use of a survey of households in the area serviced by the organisation. If a survey of all households is not possible, simple random sampling or cluster survey methodology is used

The guide (developed to sit alongside the Dynamic Contextual Analysis resource) aims to support policy makers, programme planners and practitioners to find out more about young people's ideas, beliefs and feelings about sex, relationships and health. This toolkit sets out how to involve young people and other partners in this process, suggests ways to collect information, analyse it, and present it in a way that is likely to influence programmes and policy

The study compares children who were taught by preschool teachers trained in the two-year course run by District Centres for Early Childhood Education (DICECE) with those who had untrained teachers. The study, carried out in Embu District (Kenya), found significant differences between the two groups of children particularly in terms of performance in primary schools, with children cared for by DICECE-trained teachers faring better, and in relation to absenteeism, repetition and dropout rates

The two Jewish Arab schools in Jerusalem and Galilee were set up by the Centre for Jewish Arab Education in Israel (also known as Hand in Hand) in 1998 and have flourished in their modest way, although post-Oslo optimism has given way to heightened tension. Ten Cochrane collaboration affiliates examined in a semi-structured way the quality of reviews first published in 1998. The Cochrane library remains a key source of reliable evidence about the effects of healthcare interventions, and steps continue to be made to improve quality of the reviews which remain on average more systematic and less biased than other reviews published in journals. On the whole however, the reviews were found to be over-generous when assessing the benefits of experimental interventions on health
