The Effectiveness Initiative: In January 1999 the Bernard van Leer Foundation and partner organisations in the Consultative Group on Early Childhood Care and Development initiated a three year investigation known as the Effectiveness Initiative (EI). The overall goals within this effort are to investigate what makes an effective programme work, and to initiate an international dialogue on effectiveness that deepens our understanding of how to create and/or support effective programming for young children and families.
The EI effort is grounded in the in depth study of ten specific programmes. It is also designed to be a cross-site, cross-agency collaboration and exchange that stimulates on going dialogue about effective programming. Furthermore, it is designed to test the application of qualitative research methods, well tested in other development arenas, to the field of international ECD. The goals of this effort are two-fold: to gain deeper insights into what makes ECD programmes effective, and to activate international dialogue on effectiveness that takes us, as ECD professionals, beyond our present scant measures and indicators of programme success

IRC facilitates the creation, sharing and use of knowledge so that water and sanitation sector staff and organisations can better support poor men, women and children in developing countries to obtain water and sanitation services they will use and sustain. This is achieved by offering publications, training courses, advisory and education services, research and advocacy activities. IRC's library contains over 16,000 items, much of it is grey literature. The resources can be searched using the on-line database, which can be searched by subject, author, title, publisher, date and type of publication. It provides links to 1100 documents and Web pages on the Internet. Publications can be ordered online and some can be downloaded from the website.

WATE is a non-profit organisation for development projects in countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. WASTE worls for organisations that aim at a sustainable improvement of the livnig conditions of the urban low-income population and of the urban environment in general

Hivos is an organisation working to further emancipation and democracy and to combat poverty in developing countries. It provides financial support to over 800 local private organisations in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South-eastern Europe. The acitivities of these organisations centre around the 5 Hivos policy themes: economy and credit facilities, culture and the arts, women and development, sustainable development, and human rights and AIDS. Hivos works to fight poverty, to make society a more equitable place to live, and lobbies to influence policy in favour of these objectives. In a European context, Hivos works closely with like-minded development organisations in Alliance2015, a network of organisations that aim to fight poverty and provide healthcare and education for all by 2015. Within the Netherlands, Hivos joins forces with civil society organisations that have expertise in one or more of its own major policy domains. HIVOS is also a member of the South North Federation, a broad coalition of Dutch NGOs, working on development, environment, human rights, fair trade, health and investment.
